Tithing
What is tithing
The pracrice of tithing means basically giving away 10% of your salary or business profits to a good cause or to specific people who you think or feel might benefit from this. The word tithe actually means 'a tenth' and originally it was spoken about in the bible although I can't for the life of me remember the exact quote. Obviously some people give more than 10% and some give less.
Why you might ask would ordinary decent folks give 10% of their hard earned money away
Well the one of the main reason, apart from people who are purely altruistic, is that it can create a belief in yourself that there is actually enough to go around and we don't need to hoard. As soon as we begin to hoard we become anxious and fearful about money and we can then enter into what has become to be known as a poverty consciousness or mindset. If it's true that 'like attracts like' and I for one do believe that because I see it in my therapy practice all the time with clients who attract partners who may have similar issues to them, then we probably need to heed that.
However tithing is something that if you do it and think "oh good, I can't wait for my payback" it may just backfire on you. The real issue here is that if you do it from a pure heart and do it with conviction and that conviction is based on your spiritual values then you will most likely have this generosity returned to you IN SOME FORM but not necessarily financially
Of course you could always give of your time if you don't have excess money to hand over. You could give someone some important information or tools or other resources. This is generally what I do, I give away information that will help people and to be honest I have actually found this to be more effective than giving away money, maybe that's just my experience though, it could be different for you. Experiment because you may have a personal and very individualistic way of doing this that uniquely works for you. Also the other thing to mention is that you may not always get financial aid back it may come in some other form as I mentioned above. So stay alert to new things that come your way once you start tithing.
Hey I forgot to mention, it feels really good when you start it and that's worth the boost to your self-esteem if anything else. Don't give if you really are cash strapped though, better to make a little more money first and then you'll also be a role model to others as well.
Start small and work up. What could you give away today to start.
How about smiles.
