Pre-reading skills
Correct pre-reading of an article or study material actually speeds up learning because the brain loves it when it has a foundation in place before more specific learning takes place. So by correct pre-reading you are in fact pre-loading the mind with facts and figures that later assist you to gather more knowledge in an easier manner. Which is very important when studying for exams.
When shoud you do this: At the beginning of a class or lecture and before resading the text in full. Also before research for an assignment. You should also do this before a meeting or other agenda and as a home exercise before class discussion.
How is it done: Overview the article/material for 30 seconds. Skim read briefly the overall topic by looking at the headings, any diagrams and then the summary. then ask yourself the question below.
"What are two questions this article is likely to answer?".
Have a little think about this and jot down your ideas.
Then read the first paragraph in full.
Read the first sentence in every remaining paragraph and then read the last paragraph or summary in full.
Attend class or read relevant material in full and see your comprehension and retention rates go up
