The No-meditation Meditation


One of the simplest ways of meditating is to sit comfortably during a quiet time and just watch your thoughts go back and forth. You might think, wait a minute I thought meditators try to still the mind. Well perhaps some types of meditation do but when you are beginning that's just so hard to do. Anyway if you are 'trying' to do meditation you are doing it wrong.

So observe any thoughts, just watch them go by, be curious about them, say to yourself "Oh, there's another thought going by" . After a while because you are not trying to still the mind it will start to be still on its own. If you do this daily, in a very short time you will become detached and dissociated from these thoughts and remain a passive observer of your own mind. Then you will begin to find a peaceful stillness which literally 'switches' your stress off and just allows you to be with yourself in a very different but satisfying way.

So to recap:
Allow your spine to be straight. Place your tongue just behind your top teeth. Place your hands on your thighs. The No Meditation Meditator basically sits and effortlessly watches the contents of his/her mind unfold. Thoughts and feelings will come and go within a field of open, relaxed, and non-interfering awareness. There is no effort, no focusing of attention, no breath watching, and no attempt to interfere with whatever comes up on the screen of awareness. The basic intention here is the No Intention Intention. You watch your mind unfold and you allow whatever shows up to be there. You do not try to get rid of it or keep it. You just watch. Complete non-doing. The mind stuff does all the work until it wears down on its own. The process of No Meditation Meditation can be quite relaxing and de-stressing. Eventually the mind blinks out and you experience non-duality. You just watch with relaxed and open attention. Allowing whatever is there to be there. Eventually, through no efforts of your own, you dis-identify with the mental contents and the classic blink out occurs. You do not resist or grasp even the blink out.
