Music to increase learning
It has been discoverd by Russian researxhers that certain types of music can aid and increase learning and retention. The most notable pieces of music for this are the classical baroque compositions that usually have a largo beat to them. A largo beat is about 60 beats per minute and whilst you listen actually slow your brain waves down which tend to put you into a theta brainwave state of mind that seems to open up more of your brain and any knowledge goping in seems to be retained much better than through normal learning channels.
the theory behind it states that with more of your brain awake whilst studying it beomes whole brain learning rather than just the left hemisphere domianat that most intensive study sems to be based on. thier has been a big body of research on this that does seem to support it. many students did learn faster and do better in tests of the subject matter learnt than students who did not learn whilst this type of music was played. The limbic system in the brain is the structure that processes music but this system also has responsibility for much of our long term memory. Music and memory are therefore physiologically linked in our brains.
Some recording studios have recorded this slow music that can be looped over again and geared towards study whilst playing it.
You'll have to google the term "baroque music for study" on google though to find out more
